Al Sharpton Helps Launch Campaign To End Hazing

Al Sharpton is joining civil rights leaders, and members of black fraternities and sororities to launch an anti-hazing campaign. Fueled by the death of Florida A&M University band member Robert Champion's, members of the coalition announced Thursday (May 31) that the severity of the student's story moved them to take action. "We no longer can treat it as a series of isolated and unrelated sets of unfortunate incidences," said president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Jimmy Hammock. The group has pledged $25,000 to fund the campaign which will spread the word through print advertising, and radio ads on ESPN. In addition to spreading the word through media outlets, the coalition will hold a town hall meeting on Aug. 11 at the Marriott Executive Center in Charlotte, N.C., and has marked Sept. 6 National Anti-Hazing Day. Following Champions death, FAMU's president announced that the school's Marching 100 band would be suspended until next year. 13 people implicated in the incident will also face felony and misdemeanor charges for the aspiring band leader's death.

Mayweather starts jail sentence

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has turned himself in to begin serving a three-month sentence in a Las Vegas jail for attacking his ex-girlfriend in September 2010 while two of their children watched. The undefeated five-division champion surrendered Friday before the judge who sentenced him in December - and then allowed him to remain free long enough to headline a May 5 fight. Mayweather said nothing in the brief appearance before he was handcuffed and taken out of the courtroom. Las Vegas police say that as a high-profile inmate, the 35-year-old Mayweather probably will serve most of his time away from other prisoners in a small solo cell.

Young Guru has been one of the more successful engineers in the music industry for quite some time. And during the course his career, he has gained an incredible amount of knowledge and is thankful for it. Now, he's looking to give back by creating a scholarship for audio engineering. Guru hooked up with Heal the Hood and Cape Town's School of Audio Engineering, which resulted in the creation of the Young Guru SAE Scholarship. Based on a report from Pro-Systems, the institution will be looking to invite Guru to the school to present the beneficiary of the scholarship with the award, all of which is supposed to go down in 2013. A nice gesture from Guru indeed.

Gucci Mane Loses $270K Lawsuit, Ordered To Pay For Borrowed Jewelry

Gucci Mane is going to have to cough up over $270,000. The Atlanta rapper lost a lawsuit filed by a New York jewelry company for stealing merchandise, reports TMZ. The lawsuit, filed last year by Rafaello & Co., accuses Gucci of borrowing a $130,000 diamond pinky ring, plus a necklace and a bracelet worth a combined total of $110,000. The “Okay With Me,” rapper had 15 days to return the items or pay the hefty bill. Rather than cover his tab, the 32-year-old offered up a measly $40,000, resulting in the $274,523.34 suit. Since he never responded to the motion, the judge placed a lean on his property. Despite the seriousness of the matter, Gucci—who just released the mixtape I'm Up—has yet to respond to the ruling.

Nicki Minaj Lashes Out At Perez Hilton Over Fan's Death

Nicki Minaj and celebrity blogger Perez Hilton were once close, but his insinuation that one of her dancers was involved in a fan's death, put him smackdab on her bad side. Minaj took to Twitter Wednesday (May 31) to blast Hilton for posting the story which she says was inaccurate. "@PerezHilton my dancers had nothing to do w/this tragedy," she wrote. "No one in my entourage was questioned or arrested. They all flew home from Japan." The incident occurred on May 25 in Japan, when Irish student, Nicola Furlon, was found dead in her hotel room, after attending Minaj's concert. Hilton posted a photo on his site of a suspect who he pegged as one of the "Right by My Side," rapper's dancers. "@PerezHilton that person on your sight (sic) is NOT my dancer. We do NOT know the men in custody. Too much misleading information," she wrote. Hilton smoothed things over by apologizing for his error, and removed the story from his site.
