College Course On Beyoncé Offered At Rutgers University

Students at Rutgers University will soon be able to select a course to study the career arc and impact of one of R&B's, and Pop's, most popular divas of all time in Beyoncé. Just over a month after Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson created a sociology course crafted around studying the cultural significance of Jay-Z, the Brooklyn bomber's wife will also get a course at the New Jersey college with the dubious title “Politicizing Beyoncé.”

Offered by the university's Department of Women's and Gender Studies, doctoral student and lecturer Kevin Allred was clear to distinguish that the title of the course isn't meant to be misleading, “This isn't a course about Beyoncé's political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama's inauguration weekend,” said Allred to Rutgers' school paper Focus.

“She certainly pushes boundaries. While other artists are simply releasing music, she's creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona,” continued Allred. “It's important to shift students away from simply being consumers of media toward thinking more critically about what they're engaging on a regular basis.”

While Beyoncé has undoubtedly empowered large groups of women with many of her big-voiced anthems, Allred realizes he's approaching the course as a complete outsider. “Of course, there are people who'll say, ‘You're not black. You're not a woman,'” says Allred of his academic focus. “It's something I'm always questioning and staying aware of so as not to overstep any bounds or make any claims for a group that I don't belong to.”

RIH RIH PRODUCING FASHION SERIES

International superstar Rihanna is set to join the Sky Living family.

In her first ever television project, she’ll be executive-producing and appearing in an original and hugely ambitious new fashion series exclusively for Sky Living HD.

Synonymous with cutting-edge style, the ‘We Found Love’ singer is searching Britain for the next generation of raw, undiscovered designer talent and has hand-picked Girls Aloud starNicola Roberts to head up the challenge for her.

The show will celebrate the extraordinary talent and creativity of the British fashion scene. With Rihanna, a fashion icon herself, and Nicola, who created her own Dainty Doll make-up range, at the helm, the show will recognise the increasing influence popstars have on mainstream trends.

With her world-class reputation and passion for style, Rihanna is perfectly placed to find an aspiring designer worthy of the chance to break into the hugely competitive world of fashion. Tasking Nicola with fronting the search, Rihanna will be heavily responsible for casting and will be involved in editing post-production.

Rihanna – who has sold 20 million albums – will be hands on as the programme showcases Britain’s most promising fashion designers. Over 10 weeks the unknown designers will be challenged by Rihanna and Nicola to create outfits for a string of musicians and celebrities.

The final challenge and ultimate task for the winner will be to design a unique stage outfit for Rihanna’s Wireless performance in Hyde Park in July 2012. The chance to dress one of the world’s most famous women for an event that will attract worldwide coverage is the perfect springboard for the aspiring designer’s future fashion career.
