Shakir Stewart’s Mom Launches Empowerment Fund In Son’s Memory

The family of late music executive Shakir Stewart is honoring his memory and legacy, with a new empowerment fund.

Shakir’s mother, Mrs. Portia Labrie and Saint Mary’s College High School have announced the establishment of the Shakir Stewart empowerment fund.

Shakira graduated from St. Mary’s in 1991, where he actively participated in student government and honed his leadership skills.

Those traits surfaced again as he entered into the music business after graduating from Morehouse College.

By the age of 24, Shakir had earned the title of Senior Vice-President of Hitco Music Publishing Company.

His last position was Executive Vice President of Island Def Jam, before he tragically committed suicide in 2008 at the age of 34.

During his short career, Shakir Stewart helped transform pop culture, by signing or discovering artists like Ciara, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross and Beyonce

“With this scholarship, we would like to continue Shakir’s passion for giving by providing students with the opportunity of a Saint Mary’s education,” a rep for The Shakir Stewart Endowment Fund told “This has become the life mission of Shakir’s mother and she is seeking help from all the people that were a part of her son’s
iconic music career.”

EPIC WIN/FAIL OF THE DAY: Judge Claims Black Church Is Rightful Owner of KKK Store

Courts Grant Property of KKK Store to Black Church, But There’s a Hitch…

“A South Carolina district court judge recently ruled that the New Beginnings Baptist Church is the rightful owner of a store that sells Ku Klux Klan robes and T-shirts. The battle over the building began in 1997 when a disgruntled KKK member transferred ownership to Rev. David Kennedy and his church, the Associated Press reports. However, a clause in the deed entitles the store’s proprietor, John Howard, to operate his business, the Redneck Shop, until he dies.

After a decade of Howard refusing to allow Kennedy and New Beginnings to inspect the property, the church finally sued the former KKK grand dragon for the Carolinas and others in 2008. Although it is unclear what the ruling means for Howard’s business, Rev. Kennedy told the Associated Press that after years of hateful reprisals by KKK klansman against church members, he’s not counting anything out.’I think that the church would do good in that building,’ Kennedy said.” -ABA

Wiz Khalifa Disputes "Black And Yellow" Theft Claim

After news broke that Wiz Khalifa was being sued by a Pennsylvania man claiming that his track was lifted in order to craft the Pittsburgh rap star's smash hit “Black And Yellow,” sources close to the Rolling Papers rapper say that the claims are simply untrue.

AllHipHop reported on Wednesday (January 4) that songwriter Max Warren, who moonlights as rapper Maxamillion, filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court in Pennsylvania on December 30, 2011. The suit alleges that Wiz Khalifa and “Black And Yellow” production team Stargate stole Warren's original concept and track “Pink N Yellow” – stating in the suit he authored the track in 2007. Warren further says that while he was undergoing the process to have his track copyrighted in 2008, Wiz Khalifa took the track and created “Black And Yellow” and several other remixes and spin-off tracks.

Warren is seeking $2.3 million in damages for fraud and deceit, copyright infringement and other charges.

Although Wiz has yet to respond to the suit, TMZ reports that friends close to the rapper say he's never even heard the “Pink N Yellow” song. “Wiz has never heard of this guy…it's just a plot that happens all the time to rappers to get money. This is just some no-name rapper who wants to get paid,” said one source.

TMZ contacted Warren's attorney, who told the site that Wiz is familiar with Warren and that the pair have discussed a settlement although Wiz's side did not agree to the deal.

Wiz Khalfia's rep did not offer a comment.
