Its
10pm and I’m still GLUED to my television. Black is beautiful. My Black,
your Black, all Black is beautiful tonight. The Black Entertainment Awards is
on and for the first time in a long time, they got it right. Facebook runs
overtime with posts about whose wearing what, missing notes, or crooning the
audience senseless. Yes, the lip gloss is “poppin” tonight, and it seems any
and everyone who should be there is in the building. Not to mention, Shaft,
himself, Samuel Jackson, is hosting, adding a different flavor to the all too
familiar evening. As I position myself between the laughter of my family and
the desire to not miss any good moments, I find myself dancing in the middle of
the family room at the sounds of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. Every tribute
seems heartfelt and sincere from the sexy chocolate renditions of Joe and
Tyrese-the one name wonders, to the solemn yet joyful gospel tune Cissy Houston
sang in honor of her daughter, Whitney Houston. No dry eyes in the building and
Whitney deserved every bit of it. Finally, D’angelo, D’angelo, D’angelo. The night
was turned up a notch at the anticipation of his return from a 12-year hiatus.
Would he still have those signature corn row braids and those rock-hard abs?
Yes and no, but the sexy was still all there and that voice, piercing falsetto
and soulful groans- yes, he still got it! Though many would agree that this
awards show was one of the best, it was not without its questionable moments-
some acceptance speeches were just weird, and why was Jay Z running so late?
Anyway, the great moments outshined any shortcomings ....and I don’t regret any
extra yawns at work today. BET, our love is back on top for you....muahhhhh! by Tonya Freeman |
