An Ocean of Questions: A New Journey for Frank Ocean

by Tonya F.

Frank Ocean....Anderson Cooper.....have the freedom floodgates now opened? The social media is buzzing with the news of some of its favorite celebrities decisions to reveal their gay sexual orientation. While some are saying so what and we already knew, others are questioning the effects of this recent generosity of information and need to be who you really are. Perhaps Hip Hop Mogul, Russell Smmons, posed it best in an exclusive blog when he says, "When I read Frank's letter yesterday I had questions, for Frank, for hip-hop and for myself: Will rap artists still want to do songs with Frank? Will urban radio play a song where Frank is clearly talking about another man? Will we be comfortable if Frank makes a song about making love to another man? Will we let Frank be himself? Will we let Frank be great?"

Frank Ocean (born October 29, 1987) is an American singer/songwriter and member of the gleefully hedonistic hip-hop collective OFWGKTA. He was born Christopher “Lonny” Breaux in New Orleans, Louisiana.  He has helped pen tracks for Justin Bieber, John Legend, Brandy, and Beyonce Knowles over the last few years. In 2011, Ocean released his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, for free via his Tumblr and serves as that unmistakable voice on collaborations with rap artists Jay Z and Kanye.

The New York Daily News.com reported that the muic industry is showing support to R & B singer Frank Ocean. Many artists rang out tweets of support Wednesday praising Frank's bravery and championing him as a role model but not every tweet has been so accepting and open to listening so lyrics from a man singing about a man.  I guess Frank is one of the fortunate ones because although he has a tough road ahead it seems he's garnered some love at the start of this unpredictable journey.
