Ashanti Launches New Label Written Entertainment, Taps Busta For First Single

R&B singer Ashanti has tapped rapper Busta Rhymes and producer Jerry Wonder to help her relaunch her career, with the new single “The Woman You Love,” the first release from her label Written Entertainment.

Ashanti will showcase her business skills as well, with the official launch of Written Entertainment, which is being distributed and marketed world wide by eOne Music.

While details about her new album will not be revealed until 2010, Ashanti released a statement to about the new deal.

“I’m so excited to have my own record label, Written Entertainment. With eOne as my distributor, I feel that their innovative and ambitious approach to the music industry, really gives my label a worldwide presence,” Ashanti told “They have the top radio people in the business and are hungry to win! The more I learned the business the more I knew this is what I wanted. Ownership is so important. As a business woman this was a great move for me!”

When Ashanti debuted as an artist on Murder Inc., her self-titled debut hit the top of the charts and sold 504,000 copies in the first week, powered by hits like “Foolish,” and “Baby.”

She experienced turmoil in her career, after Murder Inc. CEO Irv Gotti went on trial for federal money laundering charges, which he was acquitted of in December of 2005.

According to Irv, their creative relationship suffered after the release of 2008′s The Declaration, so she was officially released from Murder Inc. in 2009.

Now, Ashanti is preparing her fifth official studio release.

“eOne is proud to have a partnership with Ashanti and her label Written Entertainment,” eOne’s President Alan Grunblatt said. “Ashanti truly has the independent entrepreneurial attitude that eOne was built on, and we’re thrilled to be working with her.”

Kobe Bryant's Wife Files for Divorce

The wife of Lakers star Kobe Bryant filed for divorce Friday afternoon, TMZ reported.
Vanessa Bryant, 29, cited “irreconcilable differences” in court documents posted by the entertainment site.

The sustainability of the Bryants’ relationship first came into question in 2003, when Kobe Bryant was accused of sexually assaulting a Colorado woman.

Bryant denied any assault but the all-star admitted to cheating on his wife and issued a public apology.

“You’re my backbone,” Bryant said at the time. “I’m so sorry I put you through this and having to put our family through this.”

The couple has two daughters – 8 and 5 years old.

Plies Issues Statement On Civil Verdict

Fort Myers, Florida, rapper Plies discussed yesterday’s verdict against him in regards to a shooting that occurred in July of 2006.

Plies was hit with a civil lawsuit over the shooting, which occurred in a Gainesville, Florida nightclub during a dispute with a promoter over performance time.

Plies, born Algernod Lanier Washington, his brother Ronell “Big Gates” LeVatte and members of their entourage were accused of firing into the crowd and injuring at least seven people.

After an eight day trial, a jury deliberated for eight hours and ruled against Plies and his brother.

“People with guns who started a fight were the cause of this incident,” Plies told “Obviously, I’m not happy that it happened as this caused a lot of concerns that I didn’t want or need. Unfortunately, people took this as an opportunity to try to attack me and make money that they did not deserve, rather than asking for fair compensation for their injuries.”

Plies was sentenced to probation over the shooting, while his brother was sent to prison for three years over the incident.

Although Plies was irritated by the entire ordeal, the rapper, his brother and his attorney were more than satisfied with the verdict.

The total amount of damages against Plies resulted in $35,705.00, while Big Gates’ total damages were $49,575.00.

The rapper and his brother also said they offered to pay each victims medical bills directly after the shooting, but the plaintiffs were “uncooperative.”

Plies’ attorney Robert A. Rush said that they had offered to settle for a much larger amount, prior to the $10 million lawsuit heading to trial.

“We offered the plaintiffs a much larger monetary amount than the final verdicts in an attempt to settle this case so as to avoid the litigation costs, attorneys’ fees, time needed to go to trial. However, the plaintiffs’ attorney Christopher Chestnut refused all offers we made,” stated Plies’ defense attorney, Robert A. Rush of the law firm of Rush & Glassman.

Big Gates was represented by Carl B. Schwait of the firm of Dell Graham, while all five plaintiffs were represented by Gainesville attorney, Christopher Chestnut of The Chestnut Law Firm and the law firm of Spohrer and Dodd in Jacksonville, FL.

Uncle Who Whipped Teen On Camera For Online Gang Activity Speaks Out About His Murder. Mother Hopes Her Son's Death Can Help Save Someone Else's Child

The family of Michael Taylor are still trying to come to grips with his senseless murder last week in New Orleans. As we previously reported, the 16-year old made headlines in January 2011 when his uncle, Lamoine Ward, videotaped himself whipping Taylor for putting gang related information on his Facebook wall. Ward then posted the video online where it went viral almost overnight.

In a new interview with New Orleans television station WDSU, the uncle says he did it out of love and fear for what could happen to his family.

"It was love and I wanted to really show that he's not a gang member. I was not only going on his [Facebook] walls, I was searching his friend's walls also," Lamoine said. "So, I was frightened about what could happen to my family. I was led by the right spirit when I did it, but now the enemy is twisting it in my head like I did something wrong. Maybe I draw some extra attention to him to make him feel like he need to prove to these people that he's not soft."

Asked if he had any regrets about posting the video, Lamoine told WDSU he only had one.

"I regret maybe not being a part of his life a little bit more after the video," he said.

After the video hit the net, Taylor was reportedly bullied and made fun of at school. His mother, Kimberly Ward, said her son was a good kid who may have simply been trying to fit in with the wrong crowd.

"I'm hurt," she said through tears. "I'm not angry but I'm hurt. My boy was my world. But at the same time I'm blessed that if my child's death can save another child's life and another mother [not] have to go through what I feel, then I feel alright."

She added that parent's shouldn't be afraid to check their children's Facebook pages and most of all, "Don't be a friend, be a parent."

Snoop Dogg Being Sued For $280K By Middle Eastern Concert Promoter Who Claims Snoop's Weed Smoking Damaged His Reputation

When you book Snoop Doog for an event it's a good bet the smell of chronic will be filling the air.

The Doggfather is being sued by Roger Kalaouz, a Middle Eastern concert promoter who alleges that Snoop smoked a blunt at an after party following a 2009 concert in Beirut and put the footage in a music video for "That's Tha Homie."

According to TMZ, Lebanese authorities found out about the illegal activity and launched a criminal investigation into Kalaouz's company. Kalaouz claims the investigation severely damaged his reputation and is seeking $280,000 in damages from the American rapper plus a commitment to perform two additional concerts in the Middle East.

TMZ reports that Snoop's reps are aware of the lawsuit, but so far no agreement has been worked out between the two parties.

Kanye West & Kim Kardashian Reportedly Get Cozy At L.A. 'Watch The Throne' After Party. "Kanye Was Eating Kim Up Like She Was A Piece Of Cake"

The ink may barely be dry on her divorce papers, but Kim Kardashian might already be moving on.

It hasn't quite been two months since Kim ended her 72-day marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries, and there are already rumors things could be heating up with Kanye West.

The New York Daily News is reporting that Kim and Kanye attended a "Watch The Throne" after party thrown by billionaire Ron Burkle. The two were seen getting very cozy according to sources.

"Kanye was eating Kim up like she was a piece of cake,” says the source. “He was all over her — caressing her head, touching her waist. I think he was dying to kiss her, but there were too many people in the room,”

The Louis Vuitton Don has been known to play the field. He's been spotted everywhere from Paris to Philadelphia with different beautiful women. Could Kim K be next to get chopped down?

Last month on the Wendy Williams show, Yeezy's ex, Amber Rose, hinted that he's hooked up with Kim before.

"I mean, Come on, like, you know," she told Wendy laughing. "Come on! We'll keep it cute."

While at the after party Kanye seemed to only be interested in Kim.

“He wouldn’t talk to anybody else,” the source said. Adding that Kim didn't mind the attention, “She was totally into it.”

At one point Kanye and Kim got up and went outside, although nobody knows for sure if they left together.

Jay-Z Compares Running Roc Nation To 'Having Kids'

Jay-Z isn't a dad quite yet, but maybe his many years as a label head has prepped him for fatherhood.

"I think running a label is a bit like having kids," Hov told MTV News while in New York to promote two charitable Carnegie Hall concerts in February.

The Roc Nation CEO's answer came in response to criticism that he could have done more to endorse J. Cole, who dropped his debut, Cole Word: The Sideline Story, in September. "When you know someone needs more help, you help them," Jigga said. "When you see that someone can make it on their own ... you see Kanye or J. Cole, you see that sort of talent — you let that talent be. You let that talent find its way."

It's no secret that a co-sign from the God MC can help anyone's career, but in the case of J. Cole, Hov didn't believe his Roc Nation signee needed any more than what he was given. And apparently, Jay was right. With Sideline Story, Cole debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, selling more than 217,000 copies in its first week of release.

To Hova's credit, he did appear on "Mr. Nice Watch," a braggadocious album cut off of Cole's debut, but the guest appearance came in the ninth inning. By August, Jay had not yet contributed to the album. During a press listening session that month it was clear that Cole was not expecting the feature. "Nobody owes me anything," he said. "Jay-Z doesn't owe me a verse because I signed to him."

Still, Jay was watching his protégé from afar, careful not to interfere with Cole's creative process. "Of course, you're not gonna let any harm befall it," Hov said of his approach to cultivating talent. "You pretty much let people find their way."

As Roc Nation enters 2012 with a roster that includes Willow Smith, Jay Electronica and vocalist Bridget Kelly, Hov has set a standard on how he intends to run his company. "I'm just really here to provide opportunity. I'm not here to do anything else," he said. "I provide the opportunity, you figure out what you want to say to the world and how you gonna do it.

"It's much more than just a [16-bar verse] and an endorsement deal; it's an opportunity to let your voice be heard. It's really about you, it's not about me."
